The Jets did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Malachi Fields fell into pick No. 103.
If Heidenreich pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Hill Jr. pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots still on the board.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get the heartbeat of the defense. Need was not the driver here.
In No. 16 they get a building block for the line at fair value. A real need, handled.
A reach on A.J. Haulcy in pick 33; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A curious use of the 44th pick. Quarterback, edge rusher and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Anthony Hill Jr. did not.
Malachi Fields at the 103rd overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It fills a real need, too.
Oscar Delp in Round 4, Pick 40 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Domani Jackson at pick No. 179 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Eli Heidenreich in slot 228 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jalen Huskey at pick No. 242 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
