The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Jake Majors, No. 186, roughly 95 picks past where he belonged. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
Shedeur Sanders is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, cornerback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 1st overall pick they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick 12 they get a double-digit-sack hope. Need was not the driver here.
Tate Ratledge at Round 2, Pick 3 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Derrick Harmon is a better player than the 44th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jalen Royals at No. 76 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They robbed the room for Barrett Carter here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Taking Quinshon Judkins in the Round 5 slot is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Circle this one: Cam Skattebo at pick No. 168 is a fall that decides a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Somehow Kevin Winston Jr. was still sitting there in pick 170, and they pounced on premier safety value. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 173 with a little surplus value in Dont'e Thornton Jr.. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Steal is underselling it; Jake Majors at the Round 6 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Terrance Ferguson in No. 209 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Cody Lindenberg in pick No. 248 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
