They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Tommy Mellott, 110 picks early at the Round 7 slot. The process wobbled, and the D+ is where it lands.
That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
They have staked the next five years on Shedeur Sanders, which is the only story that really matters here.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
Shedeur Sanders in slot 3 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
In pick No. 14 they get a three-down runner at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Kenneth Grant in No. 34 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and T.J. Sanders at the 39th pick is the proof. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board fumbled Tate Ratledge all the way to the 53rd overall pick, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jalon Walker in Round 3, Pick 2 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Xavier Watts at pick 70 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kyle Kennard. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Taking Tyler Warren in No. 76 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jermari Harris in the 86th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
You do not let a running back like Kaleb Johnson reach the 106th pick and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Circle this one: Deontae Lawson at the Round 4 slot is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kyren Lacy in slot 135. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jake Majors in Round 5, Pick 3 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Smael Mondon Jr. at No. 150 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Luke Kandra at the Round 5 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They robbed the room for Keon Sabb here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Steal is underselling it; Devin Neal at pick No. 170 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They jumped the gun on Dont'e Thornton Jr., taking him earlier than his grade liked. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A big swing on Antonio Williams at the 189th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They took Ricky White III at par in slot 190, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Thor Griffith this early at pick 209. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Tommy Mellott at the 240th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
