They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. However the rest shakes out, All at that price is a win they earned. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The Mike Williams deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Bottom line, with J.J. McCarthy leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 18 they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
Value with a capital V on Troy Fautanu in the Round 2 slot, a genuine coup. It fills a real need, too.
A quiet steal in the 43rd pick: Adonai Mitchell for less than the market said. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Circle this one: Amarius Mims at Round 2, Pick 17 is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No drama and no debate, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. went about where he belonged in the 68th overall pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They took Ja'Lynn Polk at par in slot 72, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They read the board right and Kiran Amegadjie was the payoff at pick 80. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A cornerback of that caliber at No. 103 is the definition of value, full stop. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where Johnny Wilson graded well above the range. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Somehow Tykee Smith was still sitting there in pick No. 180, and they pounced on premier safety value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Joe Milton III at slot 193 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Johnny Dixon at the 194th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Erick All in Round 7, Pick 11 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
