There is reaching, and then there is Marist Liufau at No. 89. The Cowboys jumped the board by 58 and dared it to prove them wrong. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 3 of 8 of the wish list covered. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 24 they get a cornerstone up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Christian Haynes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Marist Liufau at the Round 3 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A real head-scratcher, Jaylan Ford in slot 173 is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Andrew Raym this early at Round 6, Pick 38. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid sticker price for Sheridan Jones in the 231st pick, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Daijahn Anthony at the Round 7 slot, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Dylan McMahon in No. 244 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They did well to land Jalen Green in pick No. 255, just ahead of his grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
