The Cowboys spent real capital to be 63 picks early on Reggie Grimes II, and the board is going to hold them to it.
However the rest shakes out, Burden III at that price is a win they earned. Leaving offensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
Luther Burden III in the 39th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Donovan Edwards in pick 117 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The roster fit checks out.
A quiet steal in Round 4, Pick 30: Denver Harris for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A reach on Aubrey Burks in the Round 5 slot; the board had better options right there. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They liked Jaishawn Barham enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 158. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jordan James this early at pick No. 167. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Antwaun Powell-Ryland. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Brian Ugwu at No. 188 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Sage Ryan at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Key Lawrence in pick No. 215 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Deontae Lawson at slot 216 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No edge and no loss on Korey Foreman in Round 7, Pick 28; it is a wash and a sensible one. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
A wild overpay on Reggie Grimes II in the 222nd pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
