The Cowboys looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Zion Logue at the 242nd pick regardless, 48 picks early.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Smith.
Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 24 they get protection for the quarterback. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
The board had cheaper options than Patrick Paul at the Round 2 slot, and it noticed. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Christian Mahogany at slot 97 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A premium they did not need to pay, Layden Robinson a notch or two before his time. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Tykee Smith in the 171st pick, plain and simple. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Jaylan Ford at pick 173 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Daequan Hardy at pick No. 213 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Edefuan Ulofoshio at the 231st pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Zion Logue in the 242nd overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
