The Cowboys did not so much draft Quinn Ewers as overpay for him, 52 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through linebacker.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 12 they get a bell-cow for the offense, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Quinn Ewers in the 44th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Tez Johnson at the 76th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Kyren Lacy at slot 150 is the proof. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A conviction pick on Cobee Bryant at the Round 5 slot that the board grades a round light. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Luke Lachey at Round 5, Pick 33 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
Chase Lundt at No. 174 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No drama and no debate, Jaylen Reed went about where he belonged in the 190th pick. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
LaJohntay Wester in the 211th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Kai Kroeger at pick 249 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
