Draft Profile: Bio
Growing up in Inkster, Michigan, Deion Burks carved out his reputation as a three-star recruit at Belleville High School, where he torched defenses for 35 catches, 819 yards, and 12 touchdowns as a junior while helping his team achieve a perfect 9-0 record and capture the Kensington Lakes-East league title. His efforts earned him AP Division 1-2 All-Michigan recognition, setting the stage for his college journey at Purdue beginning in 2021.

After redshirting his freshman season and gradually working his way up the depth chart, Burks exploded onto the scene in 2023 with a breakout campaign that saw him lead the Boilermakers with 47 receptions for 629 yards and seven touchdowns across 12 starts. His season opener against Fresno State served as a coming-out party, hauling in four catches for 152 yards and two scores, including a career-long 84-yard touchdown that showcased his game-breaking ability. The redshirt junior's consistent production throughout the season, making at least four catches in eight games, caught the attention of Oklahoma's coaching staff and prompted his transfer to Norman for the 2024 campaign.

Unfortunately, Burks' first season in crimson and cream was derailed by injury, limiting him to just five games before a soft tissue injury sidelined him for the remainder of the year. Despite the shortened season, he managed to establish himself as a key offensive weapon, leading all first-year Sooners with 31 receptions while adding 245 yards and three touchdowns. His immediate impact was evident in the season opener against Temple, where he became the first Oklahoma player to record three receiving touchdowns in his debut, demonstrating the explosive playmaking ability that made him such a coveted transfer portal target.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Super athletic - Made Bruce Feldman's 2023 Freak's List at #95. He Wrote: " The 5-9 3/4, 191-pounder, who had 15 catches for 149 yards last season, benched 350 pounds for three reps, hit almost 22.3 MPH on the GPS and did 27 reps with 115 pounds on a single arm press. He also squatted 450 pounds for three reps. "
  • Possesses genuine burst off the line that immediately puts defensive backs on their heels and creates instant separation.
  • Route-running craftsmanship shines through his ability to manipulate tempo and sell convincing fakes at the top of stems.
  • Natural ball-tracking instincts allow him to adjust smoothly to throws over his shoulder and make catches in stride.
  • Quick-twitch athleticism and loose hips enable him to stack corners in press coverage and create windows in tight spaces.
  • Shows reliable hands when catching in rhythm, fully extending for diving catches and making tough grabs in traffic.
  • Elusive after the catch with the ability to make defenders miss in space and turn short gains into explosive plays.
  • Versatile enough to line up in multiple alignments, having proven effective both in the slot and split wide.
  • Brings valuable special teams experience with return duties, adding another dimension to his NFL value proposition.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Size limitations become glaring in contested catch situations where he simply cannot match the physicality of larger defensive backs.
  • Gets jammed up by press coverage and struggles to disengage from mid-route contact, losing timing on his patterns.
  • Tendency to drift downfield on in-breaking routes compromises the precision needed for intermediate concepts like digs and slants.
  • Inconsistent concentration has led to drops in crucial situations, including eight charted drops during his 2023 Purdue season.
  • Limited blocking ability and unwillingness to engage physically in the run game reduces his three-down value.
Scouting Report: Summary
Burks enters the conversation as a classic slot receiver whose calling card is creating separation through route-running precision and initial burst rather than winning contested catches. His ability to threaten defenses vertically while maintaining the quickness to operate underneath makes him an ideal fit for offenses that prioritize getting playmakers the ball in space. The Michigan native's skill set aligns perfectly with modern NFL passing attacks that emphasize quick game concepts and manufactured touches for smaller receivers who can create after the catch.

Teams running spread concepts with heavy 11 personnel usage will find Burks most appealing, particularly those looking to add a reliable chain-mover who can also threaten deep when defenses bite on underneath routes. His experience operating from multiple alignments gives offensive coordinators flexibility in their game-planning, though his most productive NFL role will likely come from the slot where he can avoid the physicality that consistently bothers him on the perimeter. The former Boilermaker's return experience adds another layer of value for teams seeking versatility on special teams units.

While his size will always create limitations in certain matchups, Burks possesses the type of separation skills that translate well to the pro level where windows are tighter and timing is more critical. His route-running fundamentals are already NFL-caliber, and his understanding of leverage and how to attack different coverage concepts suggests he can contribute immediately as a rotational receiver with the potential to develop into a reliable target for quick-hitting passing games. The key for Burks will be staying healthy and proving he can handle the increased physicality that comes with facing NFL defensive backs week after week.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
