The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Cardinals watched Carson Schwesinger slide 58 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
They are betting Hemingway proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 24 they get a disruptive interior force, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
No edge and no loss on JT Tuimoloau in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
O'Donnell Fortune in slot 78 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Good price on Tez Johnson in pick No. 101, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Taking Donovan Ezeiruaku in the 113th pick is close to grand larceny; an edge rusher that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jeffrey Bassa at the 138th overall pick. It fills a real need, too.
A safety of that caliber at pick 140 is the definition of value, full stop. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They talked themselves into Connor Colby at Round 5, Pick 11, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Trey Zuhn III at Round 5, Pick 14 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
No drama and no debate, Joshua Farmer went about where he belonged in the Round 5 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They reached into another round for Jonah Monheim, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A big swing on Tonka Hemingway at the 173rd overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Carson Schwesinger in No. 186 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
