The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Patriots reached some 56 spots for Drew Kendall, and value like that does not grow back.
That is an interior defensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 4 they get a problem off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Value with a capital V on Emeka Egbuka in the Round 2 slot, a genuine coup. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They talked themselves into Charles Grant at pick No. 69, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Ozzy Trapilo in Round 3, Pick 17 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Cam Skattebo at the 106th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Darius Alexander in slot 119 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Chase Lundt. The roster fit checks out.
Ricky White III in slot 217 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A tidy little value on Jordan Hancock in the Round 7 slot, a step better than break-even. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Drew Kendall at pick 238 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It fills a real need, too.
