There is reaching, and then there is Trevor Etienne at slot 174. The Eagles jumped the board by 123 and dared it to prove them wrong. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
That Leonard pick is the receipt they will wave around later. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Trading back for volume was the quiet throughline of their weekend.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for James Pearce Jr. in the Round 1 slot, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They liked Donovan Jackson enough to skip the value, taking him in the 55th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No edge and no loss on Kevin Winston Jr. in pick 86; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A real head-scratcher, Elic Ayomanor in the 89th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Riley Leonard at pick No. 129 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Bryson Nesbit in No. 156 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value said wait; Trevor Etienne in pick 174 says they were not listening. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
J.C. Davis in the 187th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Cody Simon in the 209th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Dasan McCullough at pick No. 211 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
