Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Chargers spent the Round 7 slot on Matt Lee, a name most had 141 spots down the list. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The Colson pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with cornerback and quarterback still on the board.
That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Colson.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
Chop Robinson in the 37th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Byron Murphy II went about where he belonged in the 45th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid a round early for Edgerrin Cooper in pick 51, more than the board wanted. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Brenden Rice in the Round 2 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Fair-plus on Adisa Isaac, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
By-the-book stuff, Blake Corum at Round 3, Pick 8 squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Junior Colson while clear needs at cornerback and quarterback sat open.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Braelon Allen well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They paid sticker price for Ben Sinnott in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A slide stopped in slot 152, with Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jared Wiley at the 183rd overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They went early on Jeremy James in pick 226, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
They reached a country mile for Matt Lee at pick No. 251, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
