Of all the ways to open, the Browns chose the head-scratcher, spending pick 24 on Sonny Styles with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots still wide open. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Slaughter pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
On the needs board they went 5 of 9, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 6th pick they get the heartbeat of the defense. More want than need.
A curious use of the Round 1 slot. Quarterback, edge rusher and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Sonny Styles did not.
A clean, defensible pick in the 39th overall pick with a little surplus value in Omar Cooper Jr.. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jake Slaughter at No. 70. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Ja'Kobi Lane slid further than he should have, and the 107th pick is lovely value for the wide receiver. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Davison Igbinosun at pick 141 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Dametrious Crownover at pick No. 146 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. The roster fit checks out.
They let Isaiah World come to them and pounced at slot 149. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A slide stopped in Round 6, Pick 25, with Jalen Stroman worth more than the price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Desmond Reid at pick 248 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It fills a real need, too.
