Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Packers were there to profit. Jaylin Simpson, the No. 151 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 6, Pick 28. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Spending an early pick on safety with quarterback, wide receiver and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a problem off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Kamari Lassiter slipping to pick 41 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Troy Fautanu reach Round 2, Pick 25 and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Christian Haynes at the 88th overall pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Steal is underselling it; Trey Benson at the 93rd pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Cole Bishop at slot 125 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A want over a need in the Round 4 slot: James Williams adds a safety while quarterback, wide receiver and other spots keeps waiting.
Justin Rogers in No. 167 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Taking Jaylin Simpson in pick No. 203 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jordan Magee slid further than he should have, and pick 217 is lovely value for the linebacker. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They took Brian Ugwu at par in the Round 6 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Circle this one: Rasheen Ali at No. 246 is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jeremy Flax in the 251st overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
