Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders let McCarthy fall into their laps, and walked away with a B+.

The trade table was a mismatch, and the Raiders were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.

For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. Landing McCarthy that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.

Reaching for Owens left real value on the table behind him. The Tyler Higbee pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.4 · Pick 36 · Graham Barton · OT · rank 28
Value with a capital V on Graham Barton in slot 36, a genuine coup. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Braden Fiske · DL · rank 53
They jumped the gun on Braden Fiske, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 43
They took Payton Wilson at par in pick No. 44, which is nothing to complain about. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 46
J.J. McCarthy in the 66th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Christian Haynes · OG · rank 62
A clean, defensible pick in the 67th pick with a little surplus value in Christian Haynes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 79
By-the-book stuff, Jaylen Wright at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.30 · Pick 93 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 84
A quiet steal in pick 93: Khyree Jackson for less than the market said. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.33 · Pick 96 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 97
Brenden Rice in the 96th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · Jordan Travis · QB · rank 157
Jordan Travis at pick No. 152 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
R6.1 · Pick 176 · Dwight McGlothern · CB · rank 175
No edge and no loss on Dwight McGlothern in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.35 · Pick 210 · Tyler Owens · S · rank 228
Tyler Owens at Round 6, Pick 35 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
