Draft Profile: Bio
Gervon Dexter Sr. from Lake Wales High School was rated a 5-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 5-star grade by 247 Sports - he was the top ranked DT in the nation. Scouting Report: Strengths
- Made Bruce Feldman's Freak's List - ranked #83. He wrote, "This is a huge man who moves well at 6-5 1/2, 313 pounds with 24 percent body fat. Dexter squats 655 pounds and benches 425. “Gervon is a unique body type with an elite mixture of height, length, and muscle makeup,” strength coach Mark Hocke said. “He’s strong enough to hold the point and quick enough to affect the QB, making him an every-down QB nightmare.”"
- Dexter has the lateral agility and balance to cover two gaps, and also. shows some good closing burst when moving down the line in pursuit.
- Despite his size he's able to make himself skinny and slide through gaps
- Versitile prospect able to play on the nose in a 3-4 or as a classic DT in a 4-3
- Powerful run defender -a classic space eater who will require double teaming
- Well disciplined powerful hands help him shred blocks
- He’s ready for the physicality of the NFL; he has a stout build, strong core, and powerful limbs to step in right away as a three-down player.
- He has the heavy hands and upper-body strength to win with power. Dexter drops his weight and anchors well against the run, holding up at the point of attack and capable of occupying double teams.
- Good strength and balance to sit down, lockout and create a pile, leading to possibilities inside and out (in the 3-4).
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Not an explosive pass rusher - has never developed any high-level moves
- Has never produced at a consistently high level and his college career has been underwhelming considering the expectation of him coming out of high school
- Plays far too high - with poor pad level leaving him losing leverage in the run game
- Often slow off the ball - and his motor is only average
- His spin move is a bit slow and mechanical. He’s susceptible to cut blocks, a tactic that was used on him often
- Plays high and with poor balance and power. He’ll lose ground at the point of attack, and Dexter doesn’t get the full benefit of his length.
- Dexter frequently fails to locate the ball in the run game, too often taking himself out of plays
- Despite expectations of him becoming a workout warrior at the combine. He looked neither super powerful nor explosive and while he ran 4.88 forty his ten-yard split was a sluggish 1.81
Scouting Report: Summary
Gervon Dexter came out of high school billed as one of the top prospects in the nation and a no-brainer 5-star prospect. Considering where he started he's been a bit of a disappointment, his skills as a pass rusher are far from elite and in the running game his play style is hardly nuanced. As an athlete, he's failed to progress too, and hasn't displayed any major strength improvements over his college career. Despite this Dexter is still an NFL-level prospect who has elite size and a decent overall skill set and could eventually become a starter at the next level.Dexter will likely be over-drafted due to his former status as one of the top prospects in the country but currently, we can't rate him as any higher than a fourth-round selection in the 2023 NFL draft
