Draft Profile: Bio
Bralen Trice honed his early football skills at Sandra Day O’Connor High School, securing a 3-star recruit status. His journey led him to the University of Washington with the 2019 class. After redshirting his initial season and experiencing limited action during the 2020 COVID-19-impacted season, Trice's career trajectory shifted upwards. In 2021, he started making his mark, culminating in a standout performance in 2022, earning him the Defensive MVP title for the team.As a sophomore for the Huskies in 2022 Trice played in 12 games and took part in 557 snaps for the Huskies. He recorded 13 tackles, 12 assists, while adding 14 stops. As a pass rusher, he chalked up 67 total pressures, and 44 QB hurries, 15 QB hits, and 8 sacks during the year.
In 2023 as a junior Trice played in 13 games and contributed on 797 snaps. He recorded 28 tackles, 13 assists while making 23 stops. As a pass rusher, he produced a huge 70 total pressures, which included 49 QB hurries, 15 QB hits, and 6 sacks on the year.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Impressive size and build, paired with outstanding mobility for his frame.
- Strong at the point of attack, adept at recognizing blocks and sealing the edge against offensive tackles.
- Efficient at disengaging from blocks, employing strength and a refined cross-chop to neutralize opponents.
- Converts speed to power effectively during rushes, maintaining drive and pressure through contact.
- Proficient in countering offensive lineman techniques, coupled with relentless drive and hustle, contributing to coverage sacks.
- Displays agility and finesse in the initial steps, setting up tackles and swiftly countering with a repertoire of inside moves, power, or surface reduction.
- Excels in block deconstruction and maintaining a robust anchor, benefiting from a solid center of gravity to withstand late challenges from blockers.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Lacks elite quick-twitch capabilities, which narrows his pass-rush techniques beyond hand-play and power-driven strategies.
- Average in directional changes, allowing well-footed offensive tackles to maintain blocks against finesse moves.
- Displays some stiffness in ankles and hips, restricting his bend and agility at the rush's apex.
- Tendency to aim low in tackles, especially in open space, leading to missed opportunities.
- While showing potential as a stand-up linebacker, his optimal fit might be as a hand-in-the-ground defensive end, leveraging a three-point stance for better leverage and attack initiation.
- Despite his size/speed combination and overall athletic ability his tackling is inconsistent and isn't great in run defense
- Underperformed at the combine where his 4.72 was a bit of a disappointment, especially considering he dropped weight in an attempt to get faster
Scouting Report: Summary
Bralen Trice is an impressive edge prospect, equipped with the raw physical attributes and tactical acumen to make an immediate impact in the NFL. His solid frame and strength complemented by an understanding of block engagement, make him a mismatch against offensive tackles. Trice's ability to seamlessly convert speed into power and his persistent motor enable him to disrupt plays and pressure the quarterback. However, it's crucial to acknowledge areas requiring refinement; his tackling consistency is variable, and his effectiveness as a run defender is only average, occasionally revealing vulnerabilities against speedier opponents in complex run schemes. While Trice's agility and quick-twitch capabilities might not rank among the elite, his prowess in block-shedding and pass-rush moves compensates significantly. The stiffness observed in his lower body mechanics, notably in his hips and ankles, limits his bend and agility, factors that NFL coaches will need to address. Despite these areas for improvement, Trice's relentless approach and ability to impose his physical will on the game underscore his potential as a significant asset in a defensive rotation.
Bralen Trice presents as a promising talent, poised for early Day 2 consideration in the NFL Draft. His powerful pass-rushing abilities, combined with obvious power set the stage for a chance to impact at the next level. However, as it currently stands he's not a complete player and more of a pass rush specialist - if he can develop more as a run defender he could become an impact player in the NFL.
