Draft Profile: Bio
Oronde Gadsden II, a Syracuse product, emerged as a dynamic receiving threat after transitioning from wide receiver to tight end in 2022. The son of former NFL player Oronde Gadsden, he shattered Syracuse's single-season records for receptions and receiving yards by a tight end during his sophomore campaign.Gadsden's journey began as a three-star recruit from Miramar, Florida, where he excelled as a wide receiver and track athlete at American Heritage High School. After a quiet freshman year at Syracuse, his move to tight end in 2022 proved transformative. He led all tight ends nationally with 969 receiving yards and earned First Team All-ACC honors.
Unfortunately, Gadsden's 2023 season was cut short by a Lisfranc injury in the second game, limiting him to just seven receptions for 67 yards and a touchdown. Despite the setback, he entered the 2023 season with considerable hype, landing on multiple award watch lists and garnering preseason All-American recognition.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Exceptional athleticism for his size, blending wide receiver agility with tight end stature
- Demonstrates elite acceleration and burst, creating mismatches against linebackers and safeties
- Possesses advanced route-running skills, using fluid hips and sharp cuts to create separation
- Displays excellent body control and adjustment ability when tracking the ball in the air
- Natural hands catcher who attacks the ball at its highest point with authority
- Versatile weapon who can line up in-line, in the slot, or split out wide
- Shows good awareness in zone coverage, finding soft spots and presenting a target
- Dangerous after the catch, using his agility and speed to create additional yardage
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Lacks ideal bulk for a traditional in-line tight end role in the NFL
- Blocking ability is significantly underdeveloped, particularly in-line assignments
- May struggle to consistently win physical battles against NFL linebackers and safeties
- Limited sample size as a tight end, with only one full season at the position
- Injury history raises concerns, missing most of 2023 with a Lisfranc injury
Scouting Report: Summary
Gadsden's toolkit suggests a move tight end or big slot receiver at the next level, where his receiving skills can be maximized while minimizing his blocking deficiencies. His rare combination of size and athleticism will intrigue NFL teams looking for a mismatch weapon in the passing game. His potential fit in the NFL will likely be in offenses that prioritize passing game versatility from the tight end position. Gadsden's ability to stretch the field vertically and create separation in the short to intermediate areas could make him a valuable chess piece for creative offensive coordinators.
While his injury history and position transition present some risk, Gadsden's upside as a receiving threat could see him selected on Day 2 of the NFL Draft. His development as a blocker and ability to stay healthy will be crucial factors in determining his ultimate impact at the pro level.
