Scouting Report: Strengths
- Alert defender for zone coverage, showing good understanding of route progressions occurring behind him and a quick burst downhill to break on underneath passes in front of him.
- Has at least adequate straight-line speed and good balance, fluidity to change direction.
- Explodes out of his backpedal and has the hands and coordination to force interceptions.
- Can get up under a receiver’s chin and has the speed to flip his hips and run downfield. Carson has the quick and surprisingly powerful hands to jostle receivers early. But he’s at his best peeking into the backfield.
- Carson can flip his hips and run, with good top-end speed and the length to make plays on the ball.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Gets sloppy with his backpedal when playing off-man and seems to lack the instincts to close on the ball.
- Inconsistent getting off of blocks. Can be a step slow to react when a quarterback comes back to his side of the field late in progression.
- Might not be the kind of pure shutdown corner that the top prospects in this draft have the skill set to become, but offers scheme versatility and the ability to slide inside and cover the slot.
- Needs to develop a better understanding of route combinations and better overall vision.
