Draft Profile: Bio
Jamon Dumas-Johnson, affectionately known as "Pop", hails from Prince George's County, Maryland. A standout at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Dumas-Johnson was a four-star recruit and the nation's 10th-ranked linebacker. His high school career was highlighted by an 11-1 record in his junior year, propelling St. Frances to the No. 3 national ranking. Dumas-Johnson's talent and charisma even caught the attention of HBO, featuring him in their documentary "The Cost of Winning".Dumas-Johnson's collegiate journey began at Georgia, where he quickly made his mark. As a true freshman in 2021, he contributed in 14 games, racking up 22 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 2.0 sacks. His sophomore campaign was nothing short of spectacular, starting all 15 games and finishing as the team's second-leading tackler with 70 stops, including team-highs of 9.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks. This performance earned him finalist status for the Butkus Award and First-Team All-American honors from Sporting News and ESPN.
In his junior year, Dumas-Johnson started nine games before a forearm injury sidelined him. Despite the setback, he managed 34 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. After three seasons and two national championships with the Bulldogs, Dumas-Johnson transferred to Kentucky for his senior year, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a reputation as a physical, high-motor linebacker with a knack for making impact plays.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Possesses a thick, NFL-ready build at 245 pounds, allowing him to hold his ground against interior offensive linemen in the run game
- Displays excellent instincts and play recognition, often diagnosing plays quickly and attacking downhill with explosive first-step quickness
- Proven big-game performer with experience in high-pressure situations, including two national championship victories
- Versatile defender capable of playing all three downs, contributing in run defense, pass coverage, and as a blitzer
- Generates impressive power as a tackler, delivering bone-jarring hits that can set the tone for the defense
- Effective blitzer with the ability to overwhelm running backs in pass protection and even push the pocket against guards
- Demonstrates good lateral agility for his size, allowing him to sift through traffic and find running lanes to the ball carrier
- Strong leadership qualities and high football IQ, often serving as the defensive signal-caller and making pre-snap adjustments
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Lacks elite sideline-to-sideline range, which may limit his effectiveness in space against faster NFL offenses
- Can struggle at times in man coverage against more athletic tight ends and running backs out of the backfield
- Tackling efficiency has been inconsistent, with missed tackle rates exceeding 15% in each of the past two seasons
- Recent forearm injury raises durability concerns and will require thorough medical evaluation during the pre-draft process
- May need to improve his ability to consistently disengage from blocks at the second level to be a true three-down NFL linebacker
Scouting Report: Summary
Dumas-Johnson projects as a high-floor prospect with the potential to be an immediate contributor in the NFL. His combination of size, instincts, and physicality make him an ideal fit for teams employing a 3-4 defensive scheme or those valuing downhill, thumping inside linebackers. While he may not have the elite athleticism to be a top-10 pick, Dumas-Johnson's production against top-tier SEC competition and championship pedigree will certainly appeal to pro scouts. In the NFL, Dumas-Johnson should excel as a run-stopper and short-area defender. His ability to quickly diagnose plays and attack gaps will make him a valuable asset on early downs. Additionally, his blitzing prowess adds an element of pass-rush potential that coordinators can exploit in sub-packages. To maximize his effectiveness, Dumas-Johnson would benefit from playing alongside a more athletic, coverage-oriented linebacker who can complement his strengths.
