Draft Profile: Bio
Omarion Hampton hails from Clayton, North Carolina, where he attended Cleveland High School. A highly regarded four-star prospect, he earned numerous accolades, including North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year and The Charlotte Observer’s Mr. Football for North Carolina. Throughout his high school career, he rushed for an impressive 5,370 yards and 88 touchdowns, while also contributing significantly in basketball and track and field.
Transitioning to college, Hampton joined the University of North Carolina and quickly made his mark. As a freshman in 2022, he played in 13 games, rushing for 401 yards and 6 touchdowns, and was named to the All-ACC Academic Team. In his sophomore season, he appeared in all 13 games, starting 12, and was recognized as a Walter Camp First-Team All-American, among other honors. He rushed for 1,504 yards and 15 touchdowns, adding 29 receptions for 222 yards and a touchdown.
Hampton's sophomore stats are particularly noteworthy: he ranked fifth in the FBS in rushing yards (1,504), rushing yards per game (115.7), and yards from scrimmage per game (132.8). He led the ACC in several categories, including rushing yards, rushing attempts, and touchdowns. His performance included seven games with over 100 rushing yards and multiple games with two or more touchdowns.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Excellent initial burst, capable of running from traditional and shotgun setups.
- Dangerous in open field with vision and creativity to navigate defenses.
- Runs with great pad level and balance, maintaining forward momentum through contact.
- Blends good size and speed, demonstrating competitive toughness on every play.
- Effective pass blocker, capable of chipping and picking up blitzers.
- Aggressively finishes runs, consistently falling forward and maintaining low pad level.
- Exhibits strong contact balance and power, able to run through tacklers.
- Workhorse ability, excelling on inside zone runs and downhill gap plays.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Tends to run upright at times, failing to utilize pad level effectively.
- Hands can be inconsistent, needing time to gather after making catches.
- Lacks elite elusiveness, presenting a larger target for tacklers in traffic.
- Receiving skills are basic, with rudimentary route-running abilities.
- Speed is adequate but not exceptional, occasionally getting run down by defenders.
Scouting Report: Summary
Omarion Hampton brings a downhill running style that thrives on contact balance and power. His ability to churn out yards after contact makes him a valuable asset for grinding out tough yards. Hampton's strong lower body and aggressive finish on runs will make him a reliable option in short-yardage and goal-line situations, providing immediate impact as a two-down back.
However, Hampton’s game has some areas for refinement. His upright running posture can expose him to bigger hits, and his receiving skills need polish. He shows potential in pass protection but needs more consistency to be trusted on all three downs. Enhancing his route-running and improving ball security will be crucial for his transition to the next level.
Overall, Hampton's physical traits and college production indicate he can be a productive player in the NFL. Initially, he may be best utilized in early-down and short-yardage situations, but with development in his receiving and pass-blocking skills, he could evolve into a more versatile back.
