Draft Profile: Bio
Chandler Zavala played mainly Soccer and basketball at Forest Park High School in Woodbridge, Virginia before taking up football for his senior year. He was unranked by all the major scouting services and joined Division II Fairmont State University where over four years he made 20 starts at guard. After being noticed by college scouts he transferred to NC State ahead of the 2021 season.

At NC State he was handing the starting job in 2021 and in five games at left guard he allowed no sacks and just 4 total pressures before suffering a back injury ending his season.

In 2022 Zavala made 13 starts at left guard and had an elite year as he again didn't allow a single sack and just 4 pressures on the year.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Zavala has really grown into his body and now possesses prototype measurables. At 325lbs he displays elite athleticism - he runs a 5.01 forty (95th percentile), an 89th percentile shuttle, and an even more impressive 94th percentile verical
  • The past two years he's been elite as a pass blocker - he hasn't allowed a single sack and just 8 pressures during that period
  • Has the natural power to move defenders at the point of attack. Zavala also has the agility and speed to get out in front and land blocks at the second level. He also shows a good understanding of angles when climbing to the second level.
  • An unheralded player who was given an opportunity at the Shrine bowl - he didn't disappoint and looked like one of the best lineman in the blocking drills
  • He's an impressive power run blocker - In 2021 at NC State the offense averaged 172 rushing yards per game when he played, 93.1 ypg after he was knocked out for the second half of the season
  • Displays good awareness when it comes to reading moving bodies, effectively reacting and adjusting. He also shows a good feel for combo blocks.
  • Zavala plays with good leverage and he’s a surprisingly good mover for his size, showing fluidity and flexibility when blocking on the second level.
  • He’s a coordinated athlete who can win at the point of attack in the run game, and Zavala can also move to consistently land blocks
  • Consistently keeps his feet sliding while maintaining power when dealing with speed, often sending speed rushers flying past the pocket
  • In the run game, he explodes off the line of scrimmage and consistently gets out to the second level to do damage.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Has enough power in the run game, but at times Zavala seems to lack a mean streak
  • He's an older prospect who'll be 24 at the start of the NFL season
  • Zavala doesn't take the best angles when the play breaks down and sometimes looks uncoordinated. Is a bit of a lunger
  • While he has good strength it's not elite and he won't drive back bigger defensive tackles
  • Can struggle to stay engaged, especially on the second level. His hand placement can be sloppy, costing him power.
Scouting Report: Summary
Chandler Zavala has come a long way - from being an undersized guard playing just a single year of football to seriously bulking up to become one of the best pass-protecting guards in the draft. His technique and overall skill if surprisingly impressive given his lack of playing time at the highest level at college. He's also got exceptional athletic ability and displays the speed and agility to be a major asset in the running game as a pulling guard as well as being even more impressive in pass protection.

Besides being overaged - not a big deal, and not having elite strength there aren't a lot of glaring weaknesses to his game. Zavala looks like he can go as high as the third round of the 2023 NFL draft - and he'll be a bargain there.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
