Draft Profile: Bio
Jalen McMillan from San Joaquin Memorial High School was rated a 4-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 4-star grade by 247 Sports. After high school, McMillan opted to join Washington.

In 2020 as a freshman McMillan saw action in just 3 games for the Huskies.

As a sophomore in 2021 he played 11 games and had 39 catches for 470 yards for an average of 12.1 yards per catch, with 3 TDs, and QB rating when targeted of a less than impressive 67.7.

As a junior in 2022 he played 12 games and hauled in outstanding 71 catches for an outstanding 1040 yards for an average of 14.6 yards per catch, with 8 TDs, and a QB rating when targeted of 118.3.

As a senior in 2023 in an injury-riddled season he played 9 games and made 34 catches for 462 yards for an average of 13.6 yards per catch, 3 TDs, and a QB rating when targeted of 127.3.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Boasts a lean, build, complemented by elite baseline speed and burst, making him a formidable deep threat capable of stretching defenses vertically with his game-breaking speed.
  • Exhibits exceptional agility and fluidity as a run-after-catch (RAC) weapon, with a knack for creating separation post-catch and rapidly advancing upfield.
  • Demonstrates a keen sense of spatial awareness, skillfully navigating the field to elude defenders and consistently create separation.
  • Showcases sophisticated route-running prowess, with the ability to modulate speed effectively and create windows of separation with finesse.
  • A polished route technician with a comprehensive repertoire, especially proficient in executing crisp in-breaking routes with exceptional agility.
  • Possesses reliable hands, consistently securing the ball with minimal body catch dependency, and demonstrates the capacity to swiftly reset and transition upfield post-catch.
  • Excels at hauling in challenging grabs amidst congestion, showcasing strong hands and concentration, and maintains composure and ball control under duress.
  • Offers considerable versatility, capable of impacting the game from various alignments—boundary, slot, or in motion, making him a valuable asset in diverse offensive schemes.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Thinner physique raises concerns about his play strength and ability to withstand the physical rigors of the NFL, potentially limiting his effectiveness against more robust competition.
  • Despite possessing elite speed metrics, there's a noticeable discrepancy between his timed speed and game speed, suggesting a need for improved speed translation to live action.
  • His plant-and-drive mechanics and stopping footwork lack efficiency, leaving room for improvement in route precision and explosiveness out of breaks.
  • Tendency for focus drops, particularly when attempting to extend and secure catches outside his frame, necessitating enhanced focus and hand-eye coordination.
  • While capable of making catches in traffic, occasionally falls short in contested situations due to a lack of ideal physicality - need for enhanced strength.
Scouting Report: Summary

His lean frame, coupled with his exceptional athleticism, makes him a receiver with some serious upside, especially due to his vertical speed, agility, and fluidity. McMillan's technical proficiency as a route runner, characterized by his extensive route tree, spatial instincts, and throttle control, is excellent. His ability to separate and convert at the catch point is a standout feature, augmented by impressive body control, instincts, and hand technique. However, he shows some limitations against bigger corners and has been prone to focus drops.

McMillan has played both out wide and in the slot, where he poses a speed mismatch against safeties and linebackers. His expertise in route running, utilizing quick feet and hip sink, is evident. While his high school track background doesn't always fully translate to his on-field speed, limiting his effectiveness against talented press-man corners, he thrives against zone coverage. His ability to find holes in zone and create space is very good, though he sometimes struggles in crowded field conditions. McMillan's limited play strength affects his blocking ability and his effectiveness in contested catch situations, yet his precise route-running skills make him a valuable asset, particularly in the slot against zone coverage.

Despite a knee injury affecting his 2023 season, McMillan's productivity remained high, demonstrating his resilience. His speed, route-running savvy, and versatility position him well for the transition to the NFL. Expect McMillan to be selected in the third or fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft and carve out a nice career as a slot reciever.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
