Draft Profile: Bio
Jalen Tolbert was a multi-sport athlete at McGill-Toolen High School he received an honorable mention all-region accolades from the Mobile Press-Register/AL.com following his senior year after catching 37 passes for 696 yards and nine touchdowns. He wasn't ranked by ESPN and given just a two-star prospect by 247Sports.com. He wasn't highly recruited and joined South Alabama in 2017.After redshirting his freshman season in 2017 he appeared in every game in 2018 and recorded five receptions for 60 yards.
In 2019 Tolbert started all 12 contests and finished the year with 27 catches for 521 yards.
As a junior Tolbert exploded onto the scene as he set school season records with 64 receptions and 1,085 receiving yards — making him the first 1,000-yard receiver in program history while matching another with eight touchdown catches. He ended the year as one of two 1,000-yard receivers in the Sun Belt and one of 11 in the nation. As a result, he was voted first-team all-Sun Belt Conference and was a first-team all-league selection by Pro Football Focus and Phil Steele
In 2021 Tolbert put up huge numbers as he recorded 82 receptions with 1474 YDs and 8 TDs and had a 116.9 QB rating when targeted. He was named first-team All-Sun Belt and the conference Offensive Player of the Year for his efforts.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Nice athlete with an ideal combination of size and length who has legitimate deep threat credentials
- Has a nice technique and makes good use of head fakes when going up against press coverage
- Elite balance with impressive upper body strength to create separation against man/press corners
- Has smooth acceleration and deceiving speed. Balanced and very fast with the ball in his hands.
- He gets off the line with a nice burst and is very fluid in his movements with little wasted steps in his routes.
- Has a knack for getting open and is a quarterback's best friend - passers just need to toss the ball in his area and he'll come down with it. Has made a number of circus catches
- Has elite balance tight-roping the sideline and in-and-out of his breaks, showing excellent start-stop ability and burst.
- A savvy, natural pass-catcher with reliable hands and very good focus. Snatches the ball out of the air and shows the concentration to make acrobatic catches look easy.
- Plays fast and confident. Covers a lot of ground in the short half of the field and is slippery after the catch.
- Has the strong hands any NFL wide receiver coach and quarterback would covet. Tracks the deep ball over either shoulder and brings in passes fluidly without breaking stride downfield.
- Has long arms to stiff-arm defensive backs in the open field. Willing to lower his pads to run through tackles for extra yardage. Goes over the middle, can spin out of tackles and take the big hit.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Does not always use his hands to secure deep throws, allowing the ball into his pads and chest.
- Has had an issue with concentration resulting in a number of drops
- Is a good but a great route runner who has a tendency to round them off - must improve at the next level
- While he has good top end speed he takes a while getting into his top gear and lacks elite acceleration
- Doesn't possess elite short area quickness - needs to become elusive
Scouting Report: Summary
Tolbert is a good pro prospect who has put up amazing numbers and has a good athletic skill set - he's got elite size, good speed, and great leaping ability. He however isn't a great route runner and has had issues with drops (7 as a senior) but still looks like a player who can contribute and make an impact - especially as a deep threat and eventually develop into a starting traditional outside wide receiver in the pros.We consider Tolbert to be a good value as a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
