Draft Profile: Bio
Caleb Downs from Mill Creek High School was rated a 5-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 5-star grade by 247 Sports. Following high school, Downs opted to join Alabama after being heavily recruited. In 2023 as a freshman Downs saw action in 14 games and played a total of 890 snaps at safety for the Crimson Tide. He recorded decent 85 tackles, 24 assists, while adding 30 stops. In coverage Downs notched up 3 pass breakups, 2 interceptions, and QB rating when targetted of 89.7.
After the end of the season he transferred to Ohio State where as a sophomore for the Buckeyes in 2024 Downs played in just 3 games and logged 160 snaps for the Buckeyes. He made only 5 tackles, one assist, and had 3 stops. In coverage he totaled one pass breakup, no interceptions, and QB rating when targetted of 60.4.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Good hustle player who puts himself in the action when he's not directly involved. Knows how to use his height and vertical leap.
- Reads receivers' routes and anticipates throws at the first down marker. Covers a lot of ground in a hurry when in space. Reads the quarterback's eyes and sees the routes very quickly, then has straight-line speed to arrive with or just after the ball.
- Has explosive movement skills and the fluid athleticism and change-of-direction ability to come down and cover slot receivers.
- Has a stocky build and sets a physical tone in the middle of the field. Fills hard against the run, showing speed and taking good paths to the ball.
- Downs has good size and is a fluid mover, capable of mirroring quickness underneath
- Tracks the ball well and has the natural ball skills for forcing turnovers.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- The majority of the time last season, Downs was able to physically overwhelm opposing receivers early in the down, a scenario that won’t play out as often against NFL receivers.
- Inconsistent getting off of blocks. Can be a step slow to react when a quarterback comes back to his side of the field late in progression.
- Plays out of control too often, laying a lot of big hits but also missing a lot of tackles along the way. Downs also needs to do a better job reading routes when sitting back as a single-high safety.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank
in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance.
For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.
*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
