Kaden Prather, born September 6, 2002, is a 6'4", 212-pound wide receiver from Maryland. A standout at Northwest High School, Prather earned 2019 Washington Post First Team All-Met honors and was rated a consensus four-star recruit. He initially committed to West Virginia, where he played from 2021-2022, accumulating 64 receptions for 676 yards and three touchdowns across 20 games.Transferring to Maryland for his junior season in 2023, Prather appeared in all 13 games, starting 10, and posted 42 receptions for 666 yards and 5 touchdowns. Prather led the team and ranked fourth in the Big Ten with 15.9 yards per reception. His performances earned him Honorable Mention All-Big Ten recognition and a spot on the 2024 Athlon Sports Preseason Third-Team All-Big Ten.
Prather recorded 81 receiving yards against #2 Michigan and scored touchdowns against both #4 Ohio State and in Maryland's Music City Bowl victory over Auburn, where he also logged his career-long 57-yard reception.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Plus-sized target with NFL-ready frame, presenting mismatch potential against smaller DBs
- Displays advanced body control and high-point ability, excelling in contested catch situations
- Vertical threat with consistent YAC production - 15.9 yards per catch average
- Soft hands and focus in traffic, demonstrating reliable pass-catching skills
- Polished route tree with the ability to create separation at all three levels
- Battle-tested against elite competition, showing up in big games
- Willing blocker with size to handle larger defenders on the edge
- High football IQ, quick study of playbook post-transfer
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Lacks elite top-end speed, may struggle to consistently separate from corners at the next level
- Could improve play strength to better utilize size advantage in press coverage
- Not yet a dominant force in short-yardage situations despite frame
- Production good but not elite, room to improve consistency game-to-game
- Release package needs refinement to beat jam at next level
Scouting Report: Summary
Kaden Prather brings an intriguing blend of size, ball skills, and big-play ability to the NFL Draft conversation. His frame and catch radius make him an immediate red-zone threat, while his route-running versatility suggests potential as a chain-mover. Prather's performance against top-tier competition indicates he can contribute early in a rotational role.Schematically, Prather fits offenses emphasizing vertical passing games and those valuing size mismatches. His ability to work the middle of the field effectively also suits West Coast principles. While his athletic ceiling may cap his draft stock, Prather's skill set and production profile him as a potential WR2/WR3 with room for growth.
As Prather continues to develop his physical tools and refine his craft, he could outperform his draft position. His combination of size, hands, and proven production against quality opponents make him an intriguing day two or early day three selection for teams seeking to bolster their receiving corps.
