Draft Profile: Bio
Thompson attended Mesquite High School in Gilbert, Arizona. During his senior year in 2020, he passed for 3,431 yards and 34 touchdowns. His accolades that season included the All-American Bowl Offensive Player of the Year, Maxwell Football Club Offensive Player of the Year, Ed Doherty Award, and Arizona Gatorade Football Player of the Year. Thompson's high school career totals were 9,891 passing yards with 100 touchdowns and 1,145 rushing yards with 20 touchdowns. Rated as a five-star recruit by Rivals.com, he committed to the University of Oregon.

At Oregon, Thompson competed for the starting job in 2021 but served as a backup to Anthony Brown. He appeared in three games, completing 7 of 15 passes for 87 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. In 2022, Thompson again competed for the starting role but was behind Bo Nix on the depth chart. He played in seven games, completing 11 of 20 passes for 72 yards with two interceptions. Thompson returned as Nix's backup in 2023 before entering the transfer portal on December 11, 2023.

On January 5, 2024, Thompson committed to play for Tulane. He enters the 2024 season competing for the starting quarterback position with the Green Wave.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Prototype QB build with ideal height-weight ratio; frame suggests ability to withstand NFL-level hits and deliver from a collapsing pocket
  • Howitzer for an arm; can make all the throws with velocity and drive the ball vertically, stretching defenses at all three levels
  • Quick, compact release; gets the ball out in a hurry, minimizing impact of pass rush and allowing receivers to maximize YAC
  • Touch passer on intermediate routes; demonstrates ability to layer the ball over linebackers and in front of safeties
  • Cerebral signal-caller who processes defensive alignments quickly; experience in Power 5 program sharpened mental acuity
  • Plus athleticism for the position; escape ability to extend plays and pick up chunk yardage when plays break down
  • Sturdy base and lower body strength; generates torque from ground up, maintaining accuracy when throwing off-platform
  • High-ceiling prospect with raw tools that made him a blue-chip recruit; potential to develop into franchise cornerstone
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Super limited in-game reps at the collegiate level; lack of live-action experience raises questions about ability to read complex NFL defenses
  • Inconsistent ball placement on deep shots; struggles to drop the ball in the bucket on go routes and post patterns
  • Decision-making under duress needs refinement; tendency to force throws into tight windows when pressured
  • Pocket presence and spatial awareness require development; doesn't always feel backside pressure or step up to avoid the rush
  • Short-game accuracy fluctuates; must improve completion percentage on quick game concepts to move the chains consistently
Scouting Report: Summary
Thompson's journey to the NFL is fraught with question marks due to his severely limited snaps at the collegiate level. With only 35 pass attempts over three seasons at Oregon, he's essentially a blank slate in terms of game film. This dearth of playing time makes him one of the draft's biggest wildcards, with his evaluation heavily weighted on practice reports and raw physical tools.

The 2024 season at Tulane looms as a make-or-break campaign for Thompson's draft aspirations. He needs to secure the starting job and showcase his ability to read defenses, make proper progressions, and consistently deliver accurate passes in live game situations. A strong season could vault him into mid-round consideration, while continued bench time or on-field struggles might see him fall off draft boards entirely.

NFL teams will be watching Thompson's every snap in 2024 with intense scrutiny. His arm talent and prototypical size will keep scouts intrigued, but he'll need to prove he can translate those physical gifts into on-field production. Thompson's draft fate hangs in the balance, with his performance at Tulane likely determining whether he hears his name called on draft day or faces an uphill battle as an undrafted free agent.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
