Draft Profile: Bio
After transferring to Highland Springs for his senior year In 2018, Ali Jennings caught 40 passes for 874 yards and seven touchdowns and led Highland Springs to a perfect 15-0 record and the 2018 VHSL Group 5A State Championship, defeating Stone Bridge, 37-26. As a result, he was selected to the North roster of the 2018 Virginia Big River Rivalry All-Star Game.Jennings rated a three-star prospect joined West Virginia in 2019 but saw limited action in both his freshman and sophomore years and entered the transfer protocol where he moved to Old Dominion ahead of the 2021 season. It quickly paid off as he put up 1063 Yds on 62 receptions with 5 TDs while logging a decent 105.1 QB rating when targeted.
2022 has been even more impressive where Jennings has been dominant - as he has hauled in 54 catches for 959 yards for an average of 17.8 yards per catch, with 9 TDs, and an elite QB rating when targeted of 125.2.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Jennings has enough strength to be able to consistently escape the jam at the next level. He’s a coordinated hands catcher who effectively tracks the ball downfield.
- He’s excellent downfield, accelerating to top speed quickly and stacking on top of cornerbacks. Jennings has excellent body control, contorting to make difficult catches and working well on back-shoulder throws.
- Good effort and technique as a blocker for his size. Can beat the press with elusiveness or physical contact. Runs crisp routes with sharp cuts.
- Incredible route technician on intermediate routes.
- Destructive against man coverage. Frequently makes contested catches, even in double coverage.
- Has an ideal frame that bodes well for a wide catch radius.
- Raw physical traits leave potential for a very high ceiling.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Hard to tell how good of a separator he is due to passes constantly being underthrown.
- He received offers from top schools such as Michigan State but elected to go to Old Dominion where he faces very easy competition.
- Little to no sample size against players anywhere near the skill caliber of anything he will face in the NFL.
- Despite getting many yards after the carry, it is not due to his agility but more so defensive incompetence.
Player Comparison
James Proche (Baltimore) with added deep threat capabilityScouting Report: Summary
Ali Jennings is such a challenge to properly evaluate due to the low level of competition. He was offered spots on better teams and turned them down. Due to this, he has only faced secondaries that are bottom of the barrel. His physical traits and route running skills are definitely present and I have no doubt he will have a solid, if not above average, pro day. However, when I watch his film I find myself disappointed due to the incompetence of his competition. Another smoke screen in his evaluation is poor QB play. Most of the passes thrown his way are absolutely abysmal and underthrown. It is impossible to tell if he has straight-line speed or not because his QB just doesn’t possess the capability to throw into a route.
As of this writing, Jennings is nearing 1000 yards on the season and I fully expect his continuing stats will be impeccable. If Jennings can find his way into the senior bowl, a much better analysis can be made. As of this time, we can not in give a grade higher than a UDFA or fringe seventh-round pick.
