Draft Profile: Bio
Damien Martinez burst onto the scene as a true freshman at Oregon State, quickly establishing himself as one of the Pac-12's premier rushers. The Lewisville, Texas native racked up 982 yards and 7 touchdowns in his debut campaign, earning Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year honors. Martinez followed that up with an even more impressive sophomore season, amassing 1,185 yards and 9 scores on the ground.A two-time team captain at Lewisville High School, Martinez was a three-star recruit who flew under the radar. He proved to be an immediate difference-maker for the Beavers, tying the school record with six consecutive 100-yard rushing games as a freshman. His bruising running style and big-play ability quickly made him a fan favorite in Corvallis.
After two stellar seasons at Oregon State, Martinez opted to enter the transfer portal and landed at Miami. The move to South Florida puts him in position to showcase his talents on a bigger stage as he prepares for the NFL draft. With fresh legs and plenty of tread left on the tires, Martinez aims to prove he can be a bell-cow back at the next level.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Bruising runner with excellent contact balance and power to break tackles consistently
- Displays patience to set up blocks and vision to find cutback lanes
- Deceptive lateral agility allows him to make defenders miss in tight spaces
- Accelerates quickly through holes and has enough long speed to break off chunk plays
- Runs with a low pad level and churns legs on contact to fall forward
- Showed durability as a workhorse back, handling heavy workloads without wearing down
- Reliable ball security with only two fumbles on 355 career carries
- Willing pass protector who uses size and strength effectively in blitz pickup
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Lacks elite top-end speed to consistently outrun defensive backs at the second level
- Limited production and experience as a receiver out of the backfield
- Can be indecisive at times, leading to hesitation and missed opportunities
- Needs to improve pass protection technique, particularly hand placement and leverage
- May lack the lateral quickness to consistently create on his own in tight spaces at the next level
Scouting Report: Summary
Martinez projects as a high-floor prospect who can step in and contribute immediately as part of a committee backfield. His bruising running style and ability to grind out tough yards between the tackles will appeal to teams looking to establish a physical ground game. While he may not have the electric breakaway speed or receiving chops to be a true three-down back, Martinez has the tools to be a reliable early-down hammer and short-yardage specialist. In the right system, Martinez could develop into a 15-20 carry-per-game workhorse. His vision, patience, and power make him an ideal fit for zone-blocking schemes where he can press the line and make one cut downhill. Teams that emphasize a power running game will value his ability to wear down defenses and close out games in the fourth quarter.
Martinez enters the draft process with momentum after two highly productive seasons in the Pac-12. If he can showcase improved receiving skills and pass protection at Miami, he could solidify himself as a Day 2 selection with the upside to develop into a feature back at the next level.
