Scouting Report: Strengths
- Very quick off the snap and pretty much always gets the step on the defender
- Fires off the line of scrimmage with good initial power at the point of attack. Bergeron consistently holds his own against mammoth defensive tackles, and his hand strength allows him to grip and move opponents in the run game.
- Hugely experienced blocker who has four full years of starts under his belt at Syracuse
- Shows excellent awareness against twists and stunts, and Bergeron has the strong, flexible core and wide base to catch and handle moving defenders.
- Shows good quickness and flexibility on reach blocks, and he has enough range to get out as a puller.
- Offers good position versatility - has experience playing both tackle spots
- Really nice lateral movement skills especially capable blocking on sweeps and in the screen game. Ideally suited to a zone running scheme
- Has strong hands - has the ability to latch on ride rushers consistently to the outside
- Cerebral player, quick to react to twists and stunts up front, and he shows an excellent understanding of angles when moving out as a run blocker.
- He’s a coordinated athlete who can win at the point of attack in the run game, and he can also move to consistently land blocks at the second level.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Is a little too much of a waist bender, and Bergeron doesn’t play with ideal power and functional strength. Most concerning - he often gets caught dropping his head, a bad habit that will have to be corrected.
- Didn't really show progression in 2022 where he gave up 5 sacks compared to just 1 the year before
- Only good overall athletic ability -demonstrated by his middling testing at the combine
- Arm length is limited at 33 inches he's in the 39th percentile. Maybe more suited to moving inside
- Often gets too high in his sets, sacrificing some of his power, and he doesn’t show great coordination between his upper and lower body when sliding back in pass protection.
- Loses leverage battles and plays with high pad level
- He doesn’t finish as well on the second level as he does battle in the phone booth around the line of scrimmage.
Scouting Report: Summary
Bergeron is a super experienced prospect who's played over 2500 snaps at tackle in college. He's a good not great athlete and has proved to be a consistently reliable pass blocker who rarely makes mistakes. He also displays outstanding technique in the run game as well as the required accompanying mobility. He however doesn't possess elite strength and will become overwhelmed by more powerful defenders, especially while run blocking.Overall Bergeron is a very solid NFL prospect who will likely be a day-one starter and easily adjust to the pro game. He however has limited upside and will probably never be a truly dominant player. Expect him to be selected in the second or third round of the 2023 NFL draft.
