Draft Profile: Bio
Zach Tom was rated as a three-star prospect by Scout, ESPN, and 247 after high school and was listed as the No. 3 offensive tackle in Louisiana by Scout. He was given a First-team all-state nod by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. Tom also took third in the state in the shot put as a junior. After a number of scholarship offers he accepted an offer from Wake ForrestAfter redshirting his freshman year in 2017 Tom saw action in 12 games playing on 199 snaps at center. He made a major impact in 2019 as a sophomore after he won the started job and started all 13 games playing on 1030 snaps and didn't give up a single sack and only surrendered 12 total QB pressures. As a result, he received an honorable All-ACC mention at the season's end.
As a junior in 2020 Tom started all nine games after switching to left tackle in a shortened season. On 674 snaps he surrendered just one sack with 13 total pressures and received an array of accolades including a spot on the Phil Steele ALl-ACC second team.
In 2021 Tom played on a huge 1064 snaps and started all 15 games at left tackle and in doing so gave up 3 sacks with just 13 total pressures on the season. His outstanding season was capped off with him being named a second-team All-American by Phil Steele, The Athletic, and the Football Writers Association of America, and also was handed First-Team All-ACC honors from the league and associated press.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Impressive athlete ran a 4.94 40 while weighing in at 304lbs at the combine and put up a 33 vertical
- Very good hand placement - reacts with smarts and instinct without being too agressive
- Has an outstanding punch and a strong grip to keep rushers at bay
- Good run blocker who moves with elite quickness and has a high football IQ
- Has outstanding versatility - has played an equal amount at center and left tackle and has put elite blocking stats at both positions. Probably could play guard also
- Ideally suited for a zone-blocking system where he would excel
- Pass blocking has improved each and every year to a level now we can easily describe it as elite
- Impressive lateral movement with the ability to mirror rushers - rarely gets beaten by speed rushers
- Quick feet to get inside of defensive tackles to wall off inside and reach linebackers at the second level.
- Quick and nimble, light on his feet. Very athletic blocker on the move. Good slide and hand placement effectively shut down most speed rushers.
- Willing to attack and punches multiple times to finish the play. Quick to pick up edge blitz and shows no panic, easily adjusting angles and resetting his feet. Can recover and reset his anchor. Rarely late off the snap.
- He's infinitely coachable and athletically gifted with the ideal frame, physique, weight distribution, knee bend and hand strength to be molded into a special blocker.
- Has fluid body control with loose hips. Physical and tough with good effort in the run game
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Has only average measurable with limited arm length and no overpowering qualities
- Is a bit too lean with good not great strength will need to put on weight at the next level if he wants to hold up long term
- Not as mean as you would ideally look for - more of a finesse player
- Stronger pass rushers can get under his pads and steer him aside.
- Too often is pushed back into the pocket during pass protection because. Relies more on precise angles than physicality in the running game
Scouting Report: Summary
Zach Tom is a quality pro prospect - he has three complete years starting for Wake Forrest and has consistently put up elite pass blocking numbers at both center and left tackle. He also displays a highly developed skillset, possesses great instincts, along with outstanding speed and quickness to steer edge rushers aside along with the hand movement to control bull rushers inside. Tom however is a little undersized for a left tackle at 304lbs and can be driven back by stronger rushers - he'll need to get bigger and add 15 pounds for him to become a well-rounded pro.We are really high on Zach Tom and think he could be the steal of this year's offensive line class. Most scouts seem to have him rated as a fifth-round prospect, to us that seems to drastically undervalue his talents and consider him an excellent early starter at the next level in the right system (Shanahan's 49ers seem like an obvious option) and thus view him as having early third-round value.
