New England Patriots

The Patriots found their guy under center in Daniels: B.

The Patriots looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Christian Jones at pick No. 114 regardless, 83 picks early. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.

So much rides on Jayden Daniels that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.

Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.3 · Pick 3 · Jayden Daniels · QB · rank 8
In the 3rd pick they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Adonai Mitchell · WR · rank 34
They paid sticker price for Adonai Mitchell in pick No. 34, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Malachi Corley · WR · rank 79
They took Malachi Corley at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Blake Fisher · OT · rank 100
Blake Fisher at the 103rd overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It fills a real need, too.
R4.14 · Pick 114 · Christian Jones · OT · rank 197
Christian Jones at Round 4, Pick 14 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Jared Wiley · TE · rank 205
Jared Wiley at pick 139 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.19 · Pick 155 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 155
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Braelon Allen. The roster fit checks out.
R6.7 · Pick 182 · Omar Speights · LB · rank 208
A wild overpay on Omar Speights in Round 6, Pick 7, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R7.4 · Pick 224 · Walter Rouse · OT · rank 258
Walter Rouse at slot 224 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.12 · Pick 232 · Brevyn Spann-Ford · TE · rank 224
A quiet steal in the Round 7 slot: Brevyn Spann-Ford for less than the market said. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
