Draft Grade — Texans
Overall D+
ValueC NeedB TradesF FutureC-
The phones sank the Texans this weekend: D+.

The Texans spent real capital to be 56 picks early on Michael Barrett, and the board is going to hold them to it.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. With quarterback unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

However the rest shakes out, Kinchens at that price is a win they earned. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 T'Vondre Sweat
Value said wait; T'Vondre Sweat in the 28th overall pick says they were not listening. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick43 Rnd2 Troy Franklin
Troy Franklin at the 43rd pick is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick54 Rnd2 Kamren Kinchens
The board fumbled Kamren Kinchens all the way to Round 2, Pick 22, and they scooped it up. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick59 Rnd2 Blake Corum
A reach on Blake Corum in pick 59; the board had better options right there. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick81 Rnd3 Darius Robinson
They reached into another round for Darius Robinson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick99 Rnd3 DJ James
DJ James in slot 99 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick123 Rnd4 James Williams
A curious use of No. 123. Quarterback needed the pick; a safety in James Williams did not.
Pick127 Rnd4 Javon Foster
Javon Foster in slot 127 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
Pick131 Rnd4 Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett at pick No. 131 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick163 Rnd5 Jaylen Wright
No edge and no loss on Jaylen Wright in Round 5, Pick 27; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick185 Rnd6 Jared Wiley
A real head-scratcher, Jared Wiley in the Round 6 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Pick238 Rnd7 Myles Jones
Somehow Myles Jones was still sitting there in the 238th overall pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick239 Rnd7 Joshua Cephus
Joshua Cephus at the 239th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
