Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B-

A respectable, level-headed haul for the Texans: B-.

The rest of the league had time to spare on Xavier Thomas; the Texans did not wait, grabbing him 68 spots ahead at the Round 3 slot. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.

Landing Jackson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. With interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Quinyon Mitchell
In No. 23 they get a potential shutdown corner. Need was not the driver here.
Pick59 Rnd2 Brian Thomas Jr.
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick 59 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick86 Rnd3 Xavier Thomas
Xavier Thomas at the 86th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick124 Rnd4 Khyree Jackson
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots to take Khyree Jackson, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick128 Rnd4 Ty'Ron Hopper
They reached into another round for Ty'Ron Hopper, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
Pick236 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
A slide stopped in slot 236, with Tanner McLachlan worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick245 Rnd7 Michael Barrett
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Michael Barrett in No. 245, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick250 Rnd7 Blake Watson
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Blake Watson well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
