Draft Grade — Bears
Overall B+
ValueC NeedB TradesA+ FutureA
The Bears turned the phones into found money: B+.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the Bears would have aced it. Gavin Sawchuk at No. 252 is 100 spots clear of where he belonged.

That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick57 Rnd2 Nicholas Singleton
A premium they did not need to pay, Nicholas Singleton a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick80 Rnd3 Gabe Jacas
A conviction pick on Gabe Jacas at No. 80 that the board grades a round light. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick90 Rnd3 Michael Taaffe
Michael Taaffe in pick 90 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick126 Rnd4 Kage Casey
Kage Casey in slot 126 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick155 Rnd5 Barion Brown
Barion Brown at the 155th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick165 Rnd5 Xavier Nwankpa
They paid a round early for Xavier Nwankpa in the 165th pick, more than the board wanted. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick194 Rnd6 Ricardo Hallman
By-the-book stuff, Ricardo Hallman at Round 6, Pick 18 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick229 Rnd7 Marquis Johnson
A quiet steal in pick No. 229: Marquis Johnson for less than the market said. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick248 Rnd7 Tony Rojas
Tony Rojas at pick 248 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick252 Rnd7 Gavin Sawchuk
They talked themselves into Gavin Sawchuk at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
