FutureB
A solid, sensible weekend for the Bears: B. The Gavin Sawchuk selection is the head-turner. The Bears reached 134 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. No fireworks, but a solid B.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. The Hubbard pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots.
The Jonathan Taylor deal gives the class an established piece to lean on. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Cashius Howell
No drama and no debate, Cashius Howell went about where he belonged in slot 31. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick47
Rnd2
Trevor Goosby
Trevor Goosby in the Round 2 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick83
Rnd3
Keon Sabb
Keon Sabb at pick No. 83 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick117
Rnd4
Parker Brailsford
Parker Brailsford at pick 117 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick123
Rnd4
Bray Hubbard
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 123rd pick on Bray Hubbard with interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots unsolved.
Pick155
Rnd5
Mark Fletcher Jr.
Mark Fletcher Jr. in Round 5, Pick 16 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick198
Rnd6
Barion Brown
Barion Brown at pick No. 198 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It fills a real need, too.
Pick204
Rnd6
Amare Campbell
A reach for Amare Campbell in slot 204; a little patience would have been rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick232
Rnd7
Akheem Mesidor
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Akheem Mesidor. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick254
Rnd7
Gavin Sawchuk
A big swing on Gavin Sawchuk at pick 254, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
