The 49ers clearly saw something nobody else did in Jack Velling, taking him 37 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.

Hallman at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The phones were where this weekend was really won.

It is not that Jackson is a bad player; it is that the 49ers had louder needs to answer first. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
