Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureC-
Nobody dealt better than the 49ers this weekend: B.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the 49ers would have aced it. Jamari Lyons at pick No. 215 is 41 spots clear of where he belonged. No fireworks, but a solid B.

They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Tate.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick34 Rnd2 Carnell Tate
The board had Carnell Tate higher than pick 34, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick56 Rnd2 Caleb Lomu
They jumped the gun on Caleb Lomu, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick59 Rnd2 Isaiah World
Value with a capital V on Isaiah World in the 59th pick, a genuine coup. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick60 Rnd2 Iapani Laloulu
No edge and no loss on Iapani Laloulu in the 60th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick92 Rnd3 Harold Perkins Jr.
Harold Perkins Jr. at Round 3, Pick 28 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick102 Rnd3 Oscar Delp
Oscar Delp at No. 102 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick120 Rnd4 Charles Jagusah
They read the board right and Charles Jagusah was the payoff at Round 4, Pick 18. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick128 Rnd4 Braylan Shelby
Braylan Shelby in slot 128 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick134 Rnd4 Rod Moore
Rod Moore at the 134th overall pick is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick137 Rnd4 Le'Veon Moss
A reach on Le'Veon Moss in pick 137; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick141 Rnd5 Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun at pick No. 141 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick167 Rnd5 Jaishawn Barham
They liked Jaishawn Barham enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 167. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick174 Rnd5 J.Michael Sturdivant
A swing that ignored the value entirely, J.Michael Sturdivant well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick205 Rnd6 Riley Mahlman
No drama and no debate, Riley Mahlman went about where he belonged in the Round 6 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick206 Rnd6 Austin Siereveld
Value said wait; Austin Siereveld in pick 206 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick215 Rnd6 Jamari Lyons
Jamari Lyons at the Round 6 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick241 Rnd7 Akheem Mesidor
Akheem Mesidor in pick No. 241 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick255 Rnd7 Eric Gentry
They left a pile of value on the table to take Eric Gentry this early at No. 255. A need, and now a little less of one.
