Draft Grade — Steelers

ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The Steelers let Reed fall into their laps, and walked away with a D+.

The trade table was where it all came apart. The Steelers shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.

Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Reed pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They will need Bech to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

They left with quarterback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick Analysis
Pick34 Rnd2 Kenneth Grant
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kenneth Grant in slot 34. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick60 Rnd2 Jack Bech
Jack Bech in the Round 2 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick65 Rnd3 Kaleb Johnson
They will replay Kaleb Johnson at No. 65 for years; that is how good the value is. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick83 Rnd3 Charles Grant
Charles Grant at pick No. 83 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick99 Rnd3 Will Howard
No drama and no debate, Will Howard went about where he belonged in the 99th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick102 Rnd3 Andrew Mukuba
Circle this one: Andrew Mukuba at pick 102 is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick123 Rnd4 Kobe King
A straight-up fair deal on Kobe King at the 123rd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick156 Rnd5 O'Donnell Fortune
O'Donnell Fortune in pick 156 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick185 Rnd6 Connor Colby
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Connor Colby. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick229 Rnd7 Jaylen Reed
A safety of that caliber at pick No. 229 is the definition of value, full stop. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
