FutureC-
Conviction outran the board for the Cardinals, and it cost them: F. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Darius Robinson at pick 67 is 53 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. McCaffrey falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
The Cardinals clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In the Round 1 slot they get a matchup problem out wide. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick27
Rnd1
Jackson Powers-Johnson
In the 27th pick they get a long-term starter on the line, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick29
Rnd1
Jer'Zhan Newton
A slide stopped in Round 1, Pick 29, with Jer'Zhan Newton worth more than the price. The roster fit checks out.
Pick35
Rnd2
Kool-Aid McKinstry
Kool-Aid McKinstry slipping to No. 35 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jordan Morgan
Circle this one: Jordan Morgan at slot 43 is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick61
Rnd2
Braden Fiske
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Braden Fiske well ahead of where he belonged. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick66
Rnd3
Roman Wilson
They liked Roman Wilson enough to skip the value, taking him in the 66th pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick67
Rnd3
Darius Robinson
They left a pile of value on the table to take Darius Robinson this early at slot 67. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick90
Rnd3
Payton Wilson
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Payton Wilson in pick 90, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick105
Rnd4
Michael Pratt
Fair-plus on Michael Pratt, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick115
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson in No. 115 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick117
Rnd4
Austin Booker
Austin Booker at the Round 4 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick139
Rnd5
Ben Sinnott
They took Ben Sinnott at par in Round 5, Pick 3, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick149
Rnd5
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at pick No. 149 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick152
Rnd5
Cody Schrader
Cody Schrader in pick No. 152 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick160
Rnd5
Chau Smith-Wade
A straight-up fair deal on Chau Smith-Wade at the 160th pick, value and slot in agreement. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick170
Rnd5
Layden Robinson
By-the-book stuff, Layden Robinson at the Round 5 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick171
Rnd5
Delmar Glaze
Delmar Glaze at pick 171 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick174
Rnd5
LaDarius Henderson
LaDarius Henderson at the 174th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick188
Rnd6
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey at Round 6, Pick 13 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick192
Rnd6
Josh Proctor
Josh Proctor in slot 192 is fair value, right on his grade. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick193
Rnd6
Trey Knox
A tidy little value on Trey Knox in No. 193, a step better than break-even. It fills a real need, too.
Pick200
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
A reach on Gabe Hall in Round 6, Pick 25; the board had better options right there. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick201
Rnd6
Aki Ogunbiyi
Aki Ogunbiyi at No. 201 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick211
Rnd6
J.J. Weaver
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for J.J. Weaver. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick222
Rnd7
Tyrone Tracy Jr.
They barely believed it either: Tyrone Tracy Jr. still on the board at the 222nd pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick232
Rnd7
Jawhar Jordan
Somehow Jawhar Jordan was still sitting there in pick 232, and they pounced on premier running back value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick234
Rnd7
Trevor Keegan
Trevor Keegan in the 234th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick240
Rnd7
Myles Cole
Myles Cole in pick No. 240 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick241
Rnd7
Jeremy Flax
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jeremy Flax. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick256
Rnd7
Donovan Jennings
No drama and no debate, Donovan Jennings went about where he belonged in pick No. 256. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
