Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Broncos
Overall
C+
ValueC+
NeedC+
TradesB-
FutureB-
Flashes of a plan, unevenly executed. Broncos: C+. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Broncos would have aced it. Luke Elzinga at the Round 4 slot is 86 spots clear of where he belonged. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.
The Elzinga pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with linebacker, edge rusher and other spots still on the board. The linebacker spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Watts pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
On the needs board they went 3 of 8, with interior defensive lineman the one that mattered most.
If Jahdae Barron and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Jahdae Barron
In pick 20 they get a ballhawk on the outside. More want than need.
Pick51
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
Value with a capital V on Xavier Watts in No. 51, a genuine coup. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick85
Rnd3
Jake Majors
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jake Majors. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick122
Rnd4
Luke Elzinga
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Luke Elzinga at specialist with linebacker, edge rusher and other spots open.
Pick191
Rnd6
Oronde Gadsden II
No drama and no debate, Oronde Gadsden II went about where he belonged in slot 191. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick197
Rnd6
Cam Jackson
A wild overpay on Cam Jackson in the 197th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick208
Rnd6
Torricelli Simpkins III
Torricelli Simpkins III in the 208th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
