The Raiders fleeced the room on the phones and earned a C. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Raiders spent the Round 1 slot on Rodrick Pleasant, a name most had 463 spots down the list. It lands right in the middle: a C, no more, no less.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Johnson. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Rodrick Pleasant
In the 8th overall pick they get a press-man option on the boundary, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick34
Rnd2
Fernando Mendoza
Fernando Mendoza is a better player than the Round 2 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick39
Rnd2
Elijah Sarratt
A conviction pick on Elijah Sarratt at pick No. 39 that the board grades a round light. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick84
Rnd3
Max Klare
They let Max Klare come to them and pounced at pick 84. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick134
Rnd4
Caleb Lomu
Caleb Lomu at the 134th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick175
Rnd5
Terry Moore
Somehow Terry Moore was still sitting there in Round 5, Pick 34, and they pounced on premier safety value. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick187
Rnd6
Dominic Zvada
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dominic Zvada well ahead of where he belonged. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick219
Rnd7
Tao Johnson
Taking Tao Johnson in the 219th pick is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick227
Rnd7
Dylan Lonergan
They reached into another round for Dylan Lonergan, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
