jbizzle DRAFTING FOR THEPackers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Packers
Overall
B
ValueA-
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
Pieper should have been long gone. The Packers pounced, and earned a B. The board owed the Packers one, and it paid up: Kade Pieper, the No. 40 name on the board, sitting there at slot 98 like a gift left on the doorstep.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. If Jennings pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick53
Rnd2
Greg Johnson
Value with a capital V on Greg Johnson in pick 53, a genuine coup. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick84
Rnd3
Justin Scott
Steal is underselling it; Justin Scott at slot 84 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick98
Rnd3
Kade Pieper
Circle this one: Kade Pieper at the 98th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick113
Rnd4
Bear Alexander
Bear Alexander in No. 113 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick123
Rnd4
Luke Montgomery
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Luke Montgomery at the 123rd pick. It fills a real need, too.
Pick159
Rnd5
Raylen Wilson
You do not let a linebacker like Raylen Wilson reach pick No. 159 and blink. They did not. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick172
Rnd5
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
Jermaine Mathews Jr. slipping to the Round 5 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick173
Rnd5
Christian Gray
Christian Gray at Round 5, Pick 34 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick200
Rnd6
Brandon Inniss
A slide stopped in slot 200, with Brandon Inniss worth more than the price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick215
Rnd6
Drew Bobo
Drew Bobo at the 215th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick241
Rnd7
Kevin Jennings
They paid up for Kevin Jennings at Round 7, Pick 20 when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
