FutureA
A solid, sensible weekend for the Cowboys: B-. The Cowboys went off the board in a big way for Jalen Travis, 50 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
They banked enough surplus on Rourke to cover a lot of smaller sins. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Omarion Hampton
A reach on Omarion Hampton in the 22nd overall pick; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick44
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
A tidy little value on Jihaad Campbell in pick No. 44, a step better than break-even. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick76
Rnd3
Deone Walker
They went early on Deone Walker in pick 76, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick149
Rnd5
O'Donnell Fortune
O'Donnell Fortune in No. 149 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick158
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A real head-scratcher, Dont'e Thornton Jr. in Round 5, Pick 20 is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick171
Rnd5
Jaydon Blue
By-the-book stuff, Jaydon Blue at the Round 5 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick174
Rnd5
Kurtis Rourke
A quarterback of that caliber at pick No. 174 is the definition of value, full stop. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick181
Rnd6
Caleb Rogers
They left a pile of value on the table to take Caleb Rogers this early at slot 181. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick204
Rnd6
Carson Vinson
They reached a country mile for Carson Vinson at the 204th pick, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick211
Rnd6
Desmond Watson
Desmond Watson at the Round 6 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick214
Rnd6
Tyler Batty
They reached into another round for Tyler Batty, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick239
Rnd7
Jalen Travis
A big swing on Jalen Travis at pick 239, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick247
Rnd7
LaJohntay Wester
LaJohntay Wester in Round 7, Pick 31 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
