Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesC+ FutureB-
The Chargers let Loveland fall into their laps, and walked away with a B.

Thirty-one other rooms let Colston Loveland slide, and the Chargers were the ones holding the card at the Round 3 slot. Highway robbery. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.

They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. The cost of the Igbinosun reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.

Nothing gained and nothing lost at the table.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Isaiah Bond
In No. 20 they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick52 Rnd2 Shavon Revel Jr.
Shavon Revel Jr. in the Round 2 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick87 Rnd3 Colston Loveland
You do not let a tight end like Colston Loveland reach the 87th pick and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick121 Rnd4 Derrick Moore
Derrick Moore at Round 4, Pick 20 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick157 Rnd5 Phil Mafah
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Phil Mafah in pick No. 157, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick175 Rnd5 Davison Igbinosun
A premium they did not need to pay, Davison Igbinosun a notch or two before his time. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick181 Rnd6 Antwane Wells Jr.
Antwane Wells Jr. in the 181st overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick196 Rnd6 Nick Martin
No drama and no debate, Nick Martin went about where he belonged in slot 196. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick213 Rnd6 Aeneas Peebles
They did well to land Aeneas Peebles in pick No. 213, just ahead of his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick225 Rnd7 Makari Paige
Makari Paige in slot 225 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick252 Rnd7 Xavier Truss
Nice patience on Xavier Truss, who had no business lasting to pick 252. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
