Draft Grade — Lions
Overall B
ValueB+ NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
The Lions let Pearl fall and pounced. Final grade: B.

Somebody in slot 249 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Lions sat still while Julian Pearl, the No. 204 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.

For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. Every board in the league had Williams lower, and that gap is the story. They left with cornerback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick Analysis
Pick29 Rnd1 Jer'Zhan Newton
In the 29th overall pick they get a run-stuffing presence up front at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick61 Rnd2 DJ James
They let DJ James come to them and pounced at the 61st pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick73 Rnd3 Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran at pick 73 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick164 Rnd5 Trevor Keegan
They barely believed it either: Trevor Keegan still on the board at slot 164. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick201 Rnd6 Ryan Flournoy
They paid sticker price for Ryan Flournoy in No. 201, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick205 Rnd6 Evan Williams
Evan Williams at the Round 6 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick249 Rnd7 Julian Pearl
Julian Pearl at Round 7, Pick 29 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
