Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall
B
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesA
FutureB-
The Chargers won the night they stopped Williams from sliding. Grade: B. Thirty-one other rooms let Isaiah Williams slide, and the Chargers were the ones holding the card at the Round 7 slot. Highway robbery.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Guerendo pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with interior defensive lineman the one that mattered most.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In pick 6 they get a difference-maker at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick37
Rnd2
Graham Barton
The board had Graham Barton higher than the 37th pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick47
Rnd2
T.J. Tampa
They took T.J. Tampa at par in No. 47, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick69
Rnd3
Edgerrin Cooper
Taking Edgerrin Cooper in slot 69 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick105
Rnd4
Leonard Taylor III
They paid sticker price for Leonard Taylor III in Round 4, Pick 5, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick110
Rnd4
Isaac Guerendo
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Isaac Guerendo well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
Pick140
Rnd5
Jarrian Jones
Good price on Jarrian Jones in the Round 5 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick166
Rnd5
Jared Wiley
A straight-up fair deal on Jared Wiley at the 166th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick181
Rnd6
Fabien Lovett
Fabien Lovett in pick No. 181 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick225
Rnd7
Isaiah Williams
Isaiah Williams at the 225th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick253
Rnd7
Josh Wallace
By-the-book stuff, Josh Wallace at slot 253 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
