Good, not great, for the 49ers: B-. The 49ers did not so much draft Shaun Dolac as overpay for him, 91 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want. The Williams value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In the 25th pick they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell in Round 2, Pick 11 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick75
Rnd3
Sai'vion Jones
Sai'vion Jones at the 75th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It fills a real need, too.
Pick79
Rnd3
Cameron Williams
Value with a capital V on Cameron Williams in No. 79, a genuine coup. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick119
Rnd4
Kyle Williams
Kyle Williams at slot 119 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick138
Rnd4
Luke Lachey
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Luke Lachey. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick160
Rnd5
Robert Longerbeam
A big swing on Robert Longerbeam at the 160th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick166
Rnd5
Vernon Broughton
Vernon Broughton in slot 166 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick227
Rnd7
Carson Vinson
They took Carson Vinson at par in the 227th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick249
Rnd7
Shaun Dolac
Shaun Dolac at pick No. 249 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
