FutureA
Good, not great, for the 49ers: B-. The 49ers bet big and early on Jaylen Wright, 58 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick63
Rnd2
Kingsley Suamataia
A clean, defensible pick in Round 2, Pick 31 with a little surplus value in Kingsley Suamataia. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick94
Rnd3
Gabriel Murphy
Gabriel Murphy in the 94th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick98
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter at pick No. 98 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick131
Rnd4
Mike Sainristil
No drama and no debate, Mike Sainristil went about where he belonged in No. 131. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick177
Rnd6
Josh Proctor
Josh Proctor in pick 177 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick209
Rnd6
De'Corian Clark
De'Corian Clark slid further than he should have, and slot 209 is lovely value for the wide receiver. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick213
Rnd6
Tatum Bethune
A tidy little value on Tatum Bethune in the 213th pick, a step better than break-even. The roster fit checks out.
Pick215
Rnd6
Dwight McGlothern
Dwight McGlothern in pick 215 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick245
Rnd7
Erick All
Erick All at the 245th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick252
Rnd7
Jaylen Wright
They talked themselves into Jaylen Wright at No. 252, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
